What is Video Poker?

Video poker is a poker like casino game which is played on a console the same size of a slot machine. It is based on the five card draw poker which is a variant of poker and usually played in homes and uncommon in tournaments.

It was in the mid 70’s when the earliest models of video poker became available with the combination of a television-like monitor and a central processing unit. It is said to be established in the year 1979 when Draw Poker was introduced by Si Redd’s Coin Machines. In the succeeding years, video poker has become a favorite among casino goers. This is due to the fact that most players find it more welcoming to play with the consoles than in a table with other players which may be too intimidating.

The game begins when the player places a bet by inserting money or a ticket with bar code. The Deal button should be pressed next to draw cards. The player has now the opportunity to either keeps or discards a card in exchange of a new one which is drawn from the virtual deck. After, the machine evaluates the hand and offers a payout if the hand matches any winning hand. Various machines offer various payouts. For example, some machines may offer jackpots for royal flush.

Video poker has also several variations depending on the machine. Newest video poker machines utilize a variant of the five card draw poker. Variations include Deuces Wild (there is a jackpot for four deuces or a natural royal), multi play poker (the player starts with a base of the five card draw and can be played in various play versions such as Triple Play, Five Play, Ten Play, and many more), Jacks or Better (the pay offs begin at the minimum of a pair of jack or better), Tens or Better (the minimum pay off is a pair of tens; this is a variation of Jacks or Better), Bonus Poker (another variation of Jacks or better but has a higher pay out for four of a kind), Double Bonus (there is a pay out for four aces), and Double Double Bonus (this offers a higher pay out for different four of a kind). There are also non wild games wherein the game does not have a wild card.

Most video poker machines are operated and regulated by state jurisdictions. They are usually programmed to deal cards in ramdomly meaning no particular pattern. The regulation of these video poker machines is lifted from and based upon Nevada regulation. This requires that the machine must be as random as the real thing. They are usually tested for compliance to the said requirement before they are opened and used in public. When players found a way to predict the hidden cards or to so-called reverse engineer the process, the gaming authority employed newer version of the gaming software. It no longer deals out the ten cards all at once. Instead, they deal out the first five cards and when the deal button is pressed, a new set of cards is shown.
